I tend to believe the theory of this book:

The basic idea is that when Catholic Church attacked the Templar Knights, the Templar Knights went underground and evolved into the Freemasons who eventually gave rise to the Reformation.  This happened where the Catholic Church was weakest which was in Britain and Northern Europe.

If I were Christian, I would probably choose some form of Orthodox Christianity and try to push the Old Testament in that context.  The current pope doesn't seem to be leading Catholicism in the right direction.
