A very good book about Mohammad and the Quran written by a former Muslim who studied Islam in Islamic schools and then became atheist.  His atheistic arguments are weak, of course, but his evaluation of Mohammad seems very sound.

Karen Armstrong's biography of Muhammad is not bad.
