Typically I drink alcohol before going to church, to cope with anxiety, but today I went for the first time sober. This allowed me to think more critically about the experience afterwards.
The service was nice in some ways. They played good music and sang nice hymns. The people there dressed nicely, I would say most of them dressed business casual. They recited verses from the bible. The priest told a funny story ridiculing the people in California about their over the top attitudes towards the environment. But this got me thinking about the more important things he could have been talking about. I have been to Catholic Church a number of times and to their credit I did hear them recite a verse against fornication in one sermon (which is more than the Bahais do), but I have never heard the priest himself rebuke or ridicule fornicators the way he ridiculed the California environmentalists.
Upon realizing this, I almost felt a sense of disgust. It all seemed very superficial to me, like church was just a game of dress-up, without real substance. I am feeling an urge now to go to a mosque. Not that I have heard Muslims rebuke fornicators when I went, but it seems to me like something Muslims would be more likely to do, I could be wrong.
