While the Old Testament doesn't require prayer, all successful religions today do require prayer. Islam, Judaism, and Orthodox Christianity all require several prayers per day. Our requirement is just one prayer per day of your choice.
To be honest, I debated whether prayer should be a requirement for a long time. It is harder for us who don't believe in a sentient god to pray when we don't feel like anyone is listening. And initially I didn't like praying. But now I like it. First of all, after a day of working with the disgusting insanity of modern culture, it feels nice to say words that actually make sense. So obviously you should pick a prayer that you like. Second, as I am gradually memorizing my prayer, it becomes much easier to do and just feels right. And third, my family is aware that I pray daily and I think this helps them understand how seriously I take religion, and I hope this has some impact on them.
Wikipedia has a good general
article on prayer if you would like to learn more.
